In the traditional teaching and learning, teachers teach in classes and students complete the assignments at home. 'Flipped classroom' is the reversed way of this, asking students to learn the basic concepts in advance (such as from online or printed materials at home before the class), and teachers can spend the class time for discussion and other activities tackling the more difficult parts.

Teachers in the USA, Singapore and Taiwan have started to 'flip the classroom'. Compared with the traditional teaching model, 'Flipped Classroom':

• facilitates classroom interaction;
• increases students' learning efficiency;
• develops students' ability to learn independently.

Collaborative learning happens when more than one student come together to learn. Compared with individual learning, collaborative learning encourages active learners.

Besides the teacher explains on a topic, students need to further explore it through various kinds of activities, such as discussion and project work. Unlike co-operative learning (or group learning), the focus is not about delegating tasks and increase productivity, but rather each student's involvement, and the possibility to gain from each other's perspectives.

With VLE, collaborative learning is made possible anytime and anywhere. We call this Collaborative Networked Learning (CNL). Compared with the traditional teaching model, 'Collaborative learning':

• emphasises on each student's accountability of learning;
• encourages critical thinking;
• improves students' social skills.

In the traditional teaching and learning, teachers teach every student with the same materials and students are given same amount of time to study on them. 'Mastery learning' suggests the other way round, that different students could achieve the same level of mastery if they are allowed with the amount of time they needed, and can exceed the assumption of aptitude as limitations.

Mastery learning suggests that quality instruction in various forms would help students succeed step by step. Firstly, students are exposed to a unit's material in a standard fashion; and are tested for their mastery of the unit's objectives. Teachers could then spot those below mastery, and maximise the interaction with those in need with additional instruction.

Compared with the traditional teaching model, 'Mastery learning':

• Cater for learning diversity;
• increases students' motivation;
• develops students' personalised learning path.
